A Lakeview architectural horror! The Brighton is Lakeview's prison!
Aww, the Brighton! What a "wonderful" addition to the city's skyline, it is located at Wellington and Broadway in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood. I know, you may wonder if Mr. Archibleckture admires any new construction in this city? Why, he complains about everything, from faux-Disney-to this. Yet, I do wonder who in their right mind would want to buy a very expensive condo in a building that resembles a prison? This building is classless, emotionless, cold, forbidding, gray, depressing-there are so many ways to describe it. And what of the nearly-windowless sides? The terrible lobby? C'mon now, what city official in their right mind could approve this building to be constructed? It in no way blends in with the street either. So much is wrong, so little is right. And quite frankly, this makes Mr. Archibleckture quite angry!
Love, Mr. Archibleckture (sort of)

you sound miserable. maybe you should quit architecture and go into something easier. like pottery.
There was just an article in the Chicago Journal about constructed buildings not matching their original plans. I suspect that might have happened here; but then again, it is such a bad building that I am not sure what could have been done to improve it?
mr.a-
i used to live down the block from this new prison and i remember the one that got torn down to make way for progress. it wasn't a gem, but it was a far sight better than this.
I used to live about two blocks away. Such a shame to have that thing looming over that corner...the building next to it facing Broadway has a wonderful family owned bike shop that is kind of a neighborhood gathering place...talk about a scale disconnect...
...did that building sell out? Hard to imagine anyone being tempted by those...
I just came across the link to the project:
http://www.jpstellas.com/brighton.html
As you can see, there are five units remaining; these units sell for $785,000 a piece! It appears there are 16 units in this building, so it seems that plenty of people are willing to live there. Too bad, cuz that is the only way developers would stop building like that.
If I recall correctly, the old building on the site was a white, two or three flor, colonial revival style apartment building, and was set back from the sidewalk?
It's like people only see the price tag and think it must be worth it- why else would they buy into this? boggles the mind!
I think it's a pretty decent looking hospita -- um ... I mean, condo building.
How bleak! It's criminal that so much of this sterile crap is being imposed on our city.
I just moved into the neighborhood and thought that this building was a misplaced office building. When I walked the other way down Wellington and realized it was a condo, I was horrified at the miserable excuse for residential architecture that it is. I came online to find out more about this monstrosity and was please to find this site and learn that I was not the only one stunned by it's design and location. I never saw the building it replace, but it surely had to have been a better component for the neighborhood.
