Hello, and welcome to the dark side of Chicago's renowned architectural heritage

My goal for this blog is to depict the shitty architecture that is ruining the architectural heritage in Chicago today. See entire blocks of beautiful three flats demolished to make way for a Disneyfied version of our fair city!! High rises built from the same material replace structures familiar to generations of Chicagoans. Remember this: nothing is safe in this metropolis unless the tourists come here to see it! Beware.

Will you focus on smaller neighborhood buildings too or mainly larger developments downtown?

Both actually; I hope for this site to serve two purposes...one, architectural atrocities; two, everyday buildings threatened with demolition, regardless of their architectural merit, but especially if the presence is key to a streetscape. That's where you can help out. I can't keep track of every building in Chicago, but I do want for their loss or tackiness to be publicized as much as possible. Thanks!

My hope is that by embarrassing folks about their cookie cutter homes, the quality level of new construction will increase-but also, people might think twice before they demolish older buildings. There has been so much loss (especially in neighborhoods) that is less dramatic then the Cass Studios on Wabash, but that I would argue has a greater effect on the character of the city. Mr. Archibleckture didn’t move to Chicago to live amongst cookie cutter crap. A city should have a wild side, an unpredictable side...much of the new construction is geared toward a suburban urban vision of Chicago. It creates a sterile environment, where flyers can't be posted on sign posts, where stores all sell the same wares as Woodfield.

sometimes when the tide of mediocrity weighs me down, as any drive south on ashland from devon inevitably will, i just feel like accepting the fate that has been chosen for us and just move to schaumberg already. but, i can't..it must be the rebel in me.

I will take some pics with my digicam of several eyesores and send them to you, along with their addresses. It'd be great to also post the name of the developer and the buyer(s) (it's public info afterall).
